It’s finally here.

Catalyst 2016 is in full swing, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s in store over the next two days.

Starting at noon today, over a thousand industry experts, leaders from retail and branded manufacturing companies and other e-commerce enthusiasts filtered into the conference center at the ARIA Resort and Casino, ready and eager to dive right into the future of e-commerce.

Billy Beane and Big Data

Smiles all around during Beane’s keynote

First up on the agenda: big data. Attendees spent the first hour of Catalyst 2016 being regaled with stories and insight from “Moneyballer” Billy Beane.

Beane is the executive vice president of baseball operations for the Oakland Athletics and, perhaps more famously, the inspiration for the book-turned-movie “Moneyball.” In addition to amusing anecdotes about what it’s like to have your life turned into a Hollywood movie and be played by none other than Brad Pitt, Beane shared his experience with the critical role that big data had in creating an efficient, effective and profitable business strategy.

We won’t go into all the details, but the moral of the story was clear: That classmate who was good at math probably has a better shot at making it in the MLB than the star of your high school team.

Following Beane’s speech, Catalyst attendees got a chance to wind down and get down at the conference reception. Good times were had by all, replete with great food, great music and great company.

While many took the opportunity to network and check our sponsors’ booths, others preferred to brush up on their casino skills at our mock game tables before hitting the real ones on the main floor.

The music was funky, smiles were big and the crowd seemed eager for what’s to come. Everyone left in high spirits, naturally.

We look forward to keeping you posted on all the Catalyst sessions and happenings in the days ahead. That’s all for now; we’ll see you tomorrow, folks!
