We have had several requests for some SSS data specific to the UK. Given the tough economic environment and austerity measurements, UK-based customers are very curious about how everyone is doing. Because there is no Thanksgiving, the UK doesn’t have the same Cyber Five kick-off that we have in the US, including Cyber Monday. That being said, they do call the first Monday in December, Mega Monday as that’s their equivalent of Cyber Monday (December 3, 2012 this year compared to December 5, 2011 – last year’s Mega Monday).
Here are the results from Mega Monday:
- Amazon appears a bit sluggish here with 14.3% y/y growth, so we dug into the data and what we are seeing is a very hard comp for that specific day. Broadening the scope to the month of November, Amazon UK was up a very robust 37%, so there is nothing to be concerned about from a macro perspective.
- eBay had a strong showing in the UK at up 21.9% y/y, which is aligned with what we are seeing globally from this marketplace.
- CSE was up 25.5% – in the UK, Google is still running Google Product Search, so this is driven by paid non-google CSEs and no
- Search was up 7.4% – again, a different trend than the US because there is no cannibalization for Google Shopping (yet).
