We commissioned Redshift Research to poll over 200 online retailers — 100 in the US, 100 in the UK — to discover what consumer behavior trends are influencing their sales and what online strategies they’re using to gain a share of the consumer wallet. This series of blog posts will highlight the survey findings and help you improve your business.

When it comes to selling online, it’s no surprise that Amazon reigns supreme when evaluated against other online marketplaces. Amazon and eBay are used by 85% of survey respondents, but when comparing the two marketplace giants, 60% said Amazon generates the greatest sales volume for their products. Only 13% of respondents listed eBay as their top marketplace.

Despite the statistics above, it appears retailers aren’t viewing Amazon through rose-colored glasses. Although it’s a top performer, nearly half (48%) of retailers surveyed are concerned about Amazon’s increase of market share in the e-commerce industry. If retailers don’t sell on Amazon or participate in FBA and/or Prime, they’re missing out. However, more than half of respondents have caught on to this and use FBA to streamline logistics and reach more Amazon Prime subscribers.

Logistics are a critical component of the health of a business (not to mention ratings and reviews too). Consumers are expecting to receive their orders faster and it’s a retailer’s duty to fulfill these expectations (pun intended). Let’s take a look at how our survey respondents are handling their delivery options:

  • Over a quarter (28%) of respondents offer same-day delivery to customers
  • Next-day delivery is offered by nearly two-thirds (63%) of these retailers
  • More than half (56%) of respondents offer two-day shipping to customers
  • More than 30% of retailers offer international delivery to their customers
  • Buy online, pickup in store is used by 14% of retailers

Over the past few weeks on the blog, we’ve dissected the mobile payment and social media trends that resulted from our 2015 Online Retail Survey. For a recap, you can download the full report here.
