November 29, 2010 ChannelAdvisor Reports Tremendous Online Holiday Sales

With Promotions Beginning Earlier Than Ever Before, Thanksgiving and Black Friday Sales Surpass Previous Records

Research Triangle Park, NC – November 29, 2010 – ChannelAdvisor, a software and services solution provider that enables online retailers to sell more across e-commerce channels, announced today that its customers achieved record-breaking sales for Thanksgiving, Black Friday and throughout the holiday weekend. ChannelAdvisor’s online retail same-store sales, which include retailers that have been customers for more than a year, surged to a 37 percent year-over-year increase on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday followed suit with 28 percent growth over 2009, and growth remained strong throughout Saturday and Sunday.

“To give one example of how strongly this holiday season has come out of the gate, our customers’ Thanksgiving Day Amazon sales surpassed our largest day of Amazon sales in all of 2009, which was definitely a pleasant surprise,” said Scot Wingo, ChannelAdvisor CEO. “Adding to that, Black Friday Amazon sales then doubled Thanksgiving Day’s sales, making Amazon one of the big winners so far this holiday season.”

Some of the highlights from the holiday weekend include the following:

Black Friday

  • ChannelAdvisor customers earned a record $23.1 million in gross merchandise value (GMV) on Black Friday, surpassing last year’s record by $6 million
  • Marketplaces
    • Total Marketplaces same-store sales growth was 32.0 percent
    • Amazon same-store sales surged on Black Friday with 82.3 percent growth, and maintained a steady volume over the weekend
    • eBay same-store sales came in at a solid 16.5 percent increase, which was led by fixed price and eBay motors, both of which performed well and made up for the drag from eBay auctions
  • Paid Search
    • Paid Search same-store sales grew by 30.8 percent
  • Comparison Shopping Engines (CSEs)
    • CSEs same-store sales showed a strong 19.0 percent same-store sales growth
  • Conversion rates increased to 5.4 percent this year versus 4.0 percent last year, a sign that shoppers were doing more buying than browsing
  • Average Order Value (AOV) for Paid Search and Comparison Shopping was more than $100

Thanksgiving Day

  • Marketplaces
    • Total Marketplaces same-store sales growth was 19.6 percent
    • Amazon same-store sales growth was up 27.5 percent, which was lower due to Amazon having impressive Thanksgiving figures last year as well
    • eBay same-store sales growth was 16.1 percent
  • Paid Search
    • Paid search same-store sales peaked at an impressive growth of 58.9 percent
  • Comparison Shopping Engines
    • CSE same-store sales were up by 23.2 percent

“Most shoppers are still in a recession mindset; many budgeted a set amount and that is all they will be spending this holiday season,” continued Wingo. “Because of this, we saw an incredible amount of effort from retailers to secure those shoppers’ dollars early before their budget ran out, and these record growth figures suggest that strategy was successful.”

Another trend of note throughout the holiday weekend included standout category growth for apparel, consumer electronics and toys, all categories that historically perform well during the holiday season but have done exceptionally well to date.

“Today is Cyber Monday, which is the last day of the ‘Cyber 5’ as we’re referring to the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday,” said Wingo. “We’re eagerly watching sales to see if the growth trend from the weekend will continue online, and we’ll be tracking sales throughout the day and tweeting our progress via @ChannelAdvisor.”
